Konzeptlos presents:
COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS feat. STELLA ANGELICO *Live*
Afterparty AKIWAWA DJ Pun & Rainer

DJ FORMAT (UK)
DJ Pun & Rainer

Tonight is Kaschemme’s season opening and AKIWAWA welcomes DJ Format, what a perfect timing. DJ Format doesn’t need much of an introduction, he’s a fantastic Rap DJ/Producer and is rocking the clubs around the globe with his bone breaking funky B-Boy sounds. He also has a time consuming passion of hunting obscure funky 60/70s sounds and is always on the look-out for the next obscure and lesser known bits. Not only searching for drum-breaks or samples, he adores these sounds, especially the psychedelic fuzz guitar tunes. This is one of the reasons that got him on the radar of the UK label BBE Records. In 2016 they released the awesome compilation „DJ Formats Psych Out (A Collection Of International Funky Fuzz Laiden Gems)“, containing 14 psychedelic obscurities from all over the globe, handpicked out of DJ Formats shelfs.

He rarely presents these jewels from his immense record collection to the public in one of his DJ-sets. Of course some of these tunes find their way sampled on his brilliant productions. Well, tonight at AKIWAWA you’ll have the rare chance to hear him play these hidden gems. DJ Format is going to put the needle on whatever he wants, alongside DJ Pun & Rainer! From Soul, Funk to Breaks, Psych, Rock or Rap etc. everything is possible! One thing is for sure, he’ll pick only his most favourite and best records, quality first! So if you're in Basel, do not miss this chance.

AKIWAWA… the bimonthly night run by DJ Pun (Unique) and Rainer (Konzeptlos)… raw, dusty & crackling – Soul, Funk, Island & African plates…

Konzeptlos presents: Hailu Mergia / AKWIAWA with special guest DJ CASSAWARRIOR

Sunday June 4th
Konzeptlos presents: Hailu Mergia *live* (Ethiopia / USA)
Afterparty: AKIWAWA with special guest DJ Cassawarrior (Australia), DJ Pun & Rainer
21h doors, 22h concert

Kaschemme Basel, Lehenmattstrasse 353, 4052 Basel

The keyboardist Hailu Mergia was a major star in 1970es Ethiopia, presiding over the country‘s leading instrumental ensemble Walias Band, which worked restlessly on the Addis Ababa hotel circuit and jamming with luminaries like Duke Ellington and Manu Dibango. In 1981 a good part of Walias including Hailu used the first ever US tour of an Ethiopian music group to escape the dictatorial Mengistu regime. Since then Hailu has been a resident of the Was- hington DC area, spending most of his recent years as a cab driver at the capital‘s Dulles Airport and playing only privately.
Brian Shimkovitz, operator of the acclaimed blog-turned-record label Awesome Tapes From Africa, who came across „Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument“, a somehow obscure 1985 cassette, in a music store in Ethiopia, tracked down the old maestro and reissued it. On the back of Shimkovitz‘ reissue, Hailu started to play live again in 2013, exploring the deep, liquid and hypnotic qualities of his music, while not forgetting to throw in some hefty bits of funk now and then. In May 2017 Hailu will for the first time make his „American“ band tour Europe, which in fact features the Ethiopian bass wizard Alemseged Kebede and the Trinidadian master drummer Kenneth „Ken“ Joseph.
DJ Cassawarrior is an African music pilgrim who regularly travels ‘the continent’ in search of the finest in rare vinyl gems. His penchant for Congolese Rhumba, West African Funk & Highlife, Sudanese Music and African Coastal sounds is only surpassed by his passion for 'Golden Era' Ethiopian music.
His collection of Ethiopian and Eritrean discs is second to none and rate among some of the most rare and sought after vinyls on the planet. His love affair of the sounds from ‘the Horn of Africa’ was initiated while playing bass guitar and touring with Ethiopian music great Mulatu Astatke, and later with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete. Cassawarrior is also a DJ regular at Glastonbury Festival, as well as being a radio presenter with Australia's premiere independent radio station PBS 106.7 fm.

Sunday April 30th
Konzeptlos presents:
MABIISI *Live* (Ghana, Burkina Faso)
Afterparty: AKWIAWA - DJ Pun & Rainer
doors 9pm / concert 10pm

Mabiisi is the natural artistic encounter between acclaimed Burkinabè Art Melody and Stevo atambire, one of the most influential kologo musicians of Ghana. Both artists speak languages that are close, they hail from similar cultures, yet their people have been left estranged and distant by the colonial boundaries of the region.

Mabiisi means "brothers from a same mother" in both the Frafra of northern Ghana and the Mooré language of Burkina Faso's Mossi people. The concept stems from Art Melody's wish to reconnect with his musical roots, his desire to go back to the time when his voice encouraged farmers, as a young boy singing in the fields with his mother. The boy is now an experienced international artist, considered one of the most significant voices in African hip hop. Likewise Stevo Atambire has experienced tremendous success at home in the north of Ghana, as well as on the road as part of Wanlov the Kubolor's innovative Afro Gypsy band.

Following a first encounter in Accra in December 2014, the natural intuition and chemistry between Art Melody and Stevo Atambire immediately drove the two to create a timeless opus, a collection of songs drawing as much from their common land as it does from their own musical paths, a reconciliation of the village and the city, of Francophone and Anglophone Africa, a genuine pan-African bridge across lands and generations, which would make Sankara and Nkrumah proud.

This will be their first show ever in Basel, as part of their second European tour!

Afterparty: AKIWAWA... the bi-monthly party with DJ Pun & Rainer!
