Konzeptlos presents: Hailu Mergia / AKWIAWA with special guest DJ CASSAWARRIOR

Sunday June 4th
Konzeptlos presents: Hailu Mergia *live* (Ethiopia / USA)
Afterparty: AKIWAWA with special guest DJ Cassawarrior (Australia), DJ Pun & Rainer
21h doors, 22h concert

Kaschemme Basel, Lehenmattstrasse 353, 4052 Basel

The keyboardist Hailu Mergia was a major star in 1970es Ethiopia, presiding over the country‘s leading instrumental ensemble Walias Band, which worked restlessly on the Addis Ababa hotel circuit and jamming with luminaries like Duke Ellington and Manu Dibango. In 1981 a good part of Walias including Hailu used the first ever US tour of an Ethiopian music group to escape the dictatorial Mengistu regime. Since then Hailu has been a resident of the Was- hington DC area, spending most of his recent years as a cab driver at the capital‘s Dulles Airport and playing only privately.
Brian Shimkovitz, operator of the acclaimed blog-turned-record label Awesome Tapes From Africa, who came across „Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument“, a somehow obscure 1985 cassette, in a music store in Ethiopia, tracked down the old maestro and reissued it. On the back of Shimkovitz‘ reissue, Hailu started to play live again in 2013, exploring the deep, liquid and hypnotic qualities of his music, while not forgetting to throw in some hefty bits of funk now and then. In May 2017 Hailu will for the first time make his „American“ band tour Europe, which in fact features the Ethiopian bass wizard Alemseged Kebede and the Trinidadian master drummer Kenneth „Ken“ Joseph.
DJ Cassawarrior is an African music pilgrim who regularly travels ‘the continent’ in search of the finest in rare vinyl gems. His penchant for Congolese Rhumba, West African Funk & Highlife, Sudanese Music and African Coastal sounds is only surpassed by his passion for 'Golden Era' Ethiopian music.
His collection of Ethiopian and Eritrean discs is second to none and rate among some of the most rare and sought after vinyls on the planet. His love affair of the sounds from ‘the Horn of Africa’ was initiated while playing bass guitar and touring with Ethiopian music great Mulatu Astatke, and later with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete. Cassawarrior is also a DJ regular at Glastonbury Festival, as well as being a radio presenter with Australia's premiere independent radio station PBS 106.7 fm.

Sunday April 30th
Konzeptlos presents:
MABIISI *Live* (Ghana, Burkina Faso)
Afterparty: AKWIAWA - DJ Pun & Rainer
doors 9pm / concert 10pm

Mabiisi is the natural artistic encounter between acclaimed Burkinabè Art Melody and Stevo atambire, one of the most influential kologo musicians of Ghana. Both artists speak languages that are close, they hail from similar cultures, yet their people have been left estranged and distant by the colonial boundaries of the region.

Mabiisi means "brothers from a same mother" in both the Frafra of northern Ghana and the Mooré language of Burkina Faso's Mossi people. The concept stems from Art Melody's wish to reconnect with his musical roots, his desire to go back to the time when his voice encouraged farmers, as a young boy singing in the fields with his mother. The boy is now an experienced international artist, considered one of the most significant voices in African hip hop. Likewise Stevo Atambire has experienced tremendous success at home in the north of Ghana, as well as on the road as part of Wanlov the Kubolor's innovative Afro Gypsy band.

Following a first encounter in Accra in December 2014, the natural intuition and chemistry between Art Melody and Stevo Atambire immediately drove the two to create a timeless opus, a collection of songs drawing as much from their common land as it does from their own musical paths, a reconciliation of the village and the city, of Francophone and Anglophone Africa, a genuine pan-African bridge across lands and generations, which would make Sankara and Nkrumah proud.

This will be their first show ever in Basel, as part of their second European tour!

AKIWAWA & KONZEPTLOS special

Ernesto Chahoud (Beirut Groove Collective)
JJ Whitefield (Poets Of Rhythm / Karl Hector)

present:

"Beyond Addis Vol.2" Release Tour

This time Akiwawa & Konzeptlos join their forces to present this duo!
Expect a night full of raw & deep Ethio JazzFunk, Afrobeat, Funk & Soul.

Raw Ethio-Funk, AfroBeat, Beirut Disco, Deep Funk, Soul, Breaks & Beats… Gratis!

AKIWAWA

Flyer by pix1.ch

DJ Fredrik Lavik (Afro7 / Jazzagression) Finland
DJ Pun & Rainer

AKIWAWA welcomes Fredrik Lavik from Helsinki to an exclusive Kaschemme-only DJ Set!

Fredrik Lavik has been DJing all over Norway/Finland since many years and digging for records whenever he was traveling abroad. He started his first Label Jazzagression Records in the early 2000s, releasing lost Jazz recordings. In 2007 he was spending his holiday in Kenya with his wife. On the last day before flying back home, he stumbled across a ‘small’ pile of records, a lost stock collection of about 25’000 dusty Kenyan singles at a woman’s house just outside Mombasa. What a find! Guys, never underestimate a woman’s record collection. 3 Years later he acquired the whole lot for a healthy sum and got it shipped home. In 2013 after an intense time of cleaning and listening, he started his website Afro7.net. Besides presenting the jewels of the musical scene of Kenya and Tanzania from the 70s and 80s, there’s a tons of background information to read while listening to the clips. The same year he collaborated with Miles from Soundway Records and released the incredible “Kenya Special” compilation, a collection of Kenyan rooted unheard sounds, hand-picked from the ‘small pile’ he got. Kenya Special Volume 2 on Soundway Records is in the works and planned to be released by the end of 2017.

Recently Fredrik started another Label named after his website [Afro7]. So far he released an utterly deep & raw collection of extremely rare Somali Sounds on a double album and a Kenyan disco twelve-inch by the Kiru Stars with extra long edits to suit any dancefloor. A series of 7inches is in the pipeline as well. All the 7 and 12inch singles are highly limited and beautifully packed in silk pressed outer covers… sneak preview: one side of a forthcoming Kenyan split 7inch release hails from the vaults of one of the Basel based Konzeptlos guys, watch out for it!

The re-discovered Kenyan Benga and Cavacha Sounds with influences of raw funk, soul and disco, have taken over global dancefloors by storm. The music begs to be played out loud. It was a logical consequence that dancefloor labels like Sofrito put their hands on them, like the head noddin’ Tropical Treats edit of the Rift Valley Brothers killer tune “Mu Africa”. Tonight at AKIWAWA these sounds are presented in their original, unedited and unfiltered way: raw, dusty & crackling! Be prepared for an ultimate Kenyan experience!  Fredrik Lavik will be playing some of his most loved East African treasures among others, together with DJ Pun & Rainer. Expect a night full of extra hissing, sizzling and dancefloor fiery Benga, Cavacha, Afro-Rock/Funk /Beat tunes with some Island tunes thrown in…   Old dusty plates only, sorry!
